The Impact of Comedy Advertisements

comedy marketing

A comedy advertisement will hold value because it accomplishes two things. These types of ads make people laugh and they give them something to think about other than the stress and frustration of their everyday life. The goal is to make the consumer feel good and encourage them to remember the product without losing the brand in the process. Humor makes it much more likely that a brand will be recognized. Brand recognition is everything when it comes to designing an ad that is both effective and memorable.

Be Classic

Not classy, classic. People remember Red Skelton, Jerry Lewis, and Robin Williams because they used comedic methods that stood the test of time. Classic comedians touched a spot within us that reminds of the fun we can find in life we just open our minds and let go of the things that often cloud our thoughts. We want to laugh. We want to smile. Above all, we want to experience the joy we often felt as kids when we could just let our guards down and laugh till our stomach hurts. The key? Create a mascot or brand and then give it a spin that will endear it to your customers. A good example of this is the Taco Bell chihuahua. It was cute, made me people smile, and was easily connected to the Mexican theme of the food.

Give A Smile, Make A Memory

Making a person smile, laugh, giggle, or even tinkle a little creates an emotional connection that goes deeper than just getting them to like your product. It triggers a response in the brain that acts just like a bookmark. It’s proven time and time again, that if you can establish a connection, either through laughter or emotion, that create a long-term memory. Coca-Cola’s “Have a Coke and a Smile” Campaign that saw Mean Joe Green of the Pittsburgh Steelers tossing his jersey to a child after the boy had offered him his Coke, is still remembered as one of the best commercials ever created. Why? Because it made people smile and it showed someone larger than life as a regular human being. When you inspire a smile, you make a memory that lasts and your product becomes part of that memory.

Laughter is always the best medicine. No matter what type of comedic method you use, if it is delivered correctly you will achieve your goal and your advertisements will have the impact you desire. If you really want to make an impact, make your client laugh. Give them what they need to laugh until the snort, giggle until they cry or just, simply smile. The result? A customer you can count on to come back time and time again, each time reinforcing the memory you originally created.
