As a freelance content writer, there are many tools that I keep handy throughout the day: my trusted notepad for recording moments of inspiration, a thesaurus for the days when the right word is on the tip of my tongue, and of course, my editorial calendar.
Any seasoned content marketing writer knows that creating the perfect combination of syllables and commas, establishing the right cadence, and producing the well-researched piece that a client needs is only as good as their ability to deliver the work on time.
Google Calendar: My Cool Tool For Success
There are a lot of calendars available; however, my personal favorite is the Google Calendar. As a slight disclaimer, this isn’t a sales pitch, but rather insight into why an editorial calendar is often a freelance content writer’s “best professional friend” and trusted confidant. In order to understand the latter claims, it is important to have a full understanding of what a copywriter does.
A copywriter:
- Becomes a subject matter expert before putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard;
- Creates engaging content;
- Caters to the needs of clients;
- Understands how to connect with a reader; and
- Delivers content on time, so that clients can meet their marketing goals.
The ability to write well, the knack for thinking of the occasional witty one-liner, and an innate love of learning are all traits that a copywriter must possess. However, when you are balancing multiple deadlines–jumping from writing about the latest medical advances to Boston’s real estate market–punctuality can quickly become a challenge.
This is where the Google Calendar comes in.
And now for the would-be sales pitch (if I were writing this for Google).
I use Google Calendar for three main reasons.
- It is easy to use.
- It is easy to sync to all of my devices (i.e. my two smartphones, two computers, and archaic iPad).
- It is easy to create customized events, set reminders, and plan out each day, week, and month of content writing, so that my clients stay happy.
I guess you could say that I use Google Calendar because it is easy; in a day that is filled with challenges, it is nice to have a reliable tool that helps me stay on task as a freelance content marketing writer.
